The Movement to End the Flouridation of Austin's Water

Did you know that Austin Water Utility routinely injects an unrefined industrial-grade toxic waste chemical into our everyday water supply?

  • Casa de Luz will be contacting other like-minded groups and individuals to begin the process of petition the City Council for a referendum on this issues.  Other cities all over the country have been voting "flouride out!"  We will keep you posted about the date, time, and location of the upcoming meeting!  Please read below.

Fluorosilicic acid, scrubbed from the smokestacks of phosphate fertilizer factories, accumulates in the body over time causing an assortment of unwanted ailments. Recent studies reveal that this chemical lowers IQ, causes bone and bladder cancer, slows the metabolic ability of the thyroid, brings on bone disease, inhibits function of the pineal gland, poisons the kidneys, and damages teeth. Per the warning on a tube of toothpaste, if an eight ounce glass of Austin water is ingested, call a Poison Control Center right away.

In 1973 when City Council made the decision to medicate its population through the public water supply, it used data that is now known as false. No reputable dentist or scientist today will state that ingestion of the former rat poison is beneficial to children and benign to everyone else which was a common perception at the time. Hundreds of thousands of our tax dollars are spent on fluoride each year. If those dollars are appropriated to prevent tooth decay in poor children, are they being used wisely?

Whether or not this effort ultimately brings an end to water fluoridation in Austin, research tells us it is time to bring up the topic once again. Communities across the US have woken up to this public health debacle and are voting against fluoridation in force. A vote against it in Austin could be the true beginning of a mass rejection of this harmful precedent.
